SOLAR ENERGY

Powering Change

What we think of Solar Power

“Every hour, enough sunlight touches the Earth to provide energy for the entire planet for a whole year.”

Cate Blanchett

“We have this handy fusion reactor in the sky called the sun; you don’t have to do anything, it just works. It shows up every day.”

Elon Musk

"Solar power, wind power, the way forward is to collaborate with nature - it's the only way we are going to get to the other end of the 21st century."

Bjork

Solar power is going to be absolutely essential to meeting growing energy demands while staving off climate change.”

Ramez Naam

Solar

Solar or Photovoltaic (PV) energy is a type of renewable energy that converts sunlight directly into electricity. It is based on the photovoltaic effect, which is the process by which a semiconductor material, such as silicon, absorbs photons of light and releases electrons, generating an electric current.

Solar/PV systems consist of solar panels made up of many individual photovoltaic cells. These cells are wired together and covered with a protective layer of glass to form a module, which can be combined with other modules to form a solar array. The electricity generated by the solar system can either be used immediately, stored in batteries, or fed into the grid.

There are many benefits of using Solar/PV energy, including:

Renewable: Solar energy is a renewable energy source that does not require any fuel to operate.

Clean: Solar energy produces electricity without emitting any harmful pollutants, making it an environmentally-friendly choice.

Cost-effective: The cost of PV technology has been declining rapidly in recent years, making it more affordable than ever before.

Reliable: Solar energy systems can operate for decades with little maintenance, providing a reliable source of electricity.

Energy independence: Solar energy systems allow individuals and communities to generate their own electricity, reducing their dependence on the grid.

Job creation: The growth of the solar industry has created new job opportunities in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

The benefits of solar energy are widespread and can benefit individuals, businesses, and communities alike. Those who benefit the most from solar energy are typically individuals and organisations with high electricity bills, such as homeowners, schools, and commercial buildings.

In terms of the future of solar technology, the prospects are bright. PV technology is rapidly advancing, with new materials, designs, and manufacturing processes being developed. As the technology continues to improve, it is expected to become even more cost-effective and efficient, making it a more attractive option for a wider range of applications.

With increasing concerns about climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is certain that demand for solar energy will continue to grow in the coming years.

4 Solar facts you need to know

Our sun produces 173,000 terrawatts  or 3.85 exajoules per hour, enough power to meet the world's energy needs for an entire year.

Solar energy is the most abundant renewable energy source available on Earth.

Photovoltaic panels have no moving parts, require little maintenance, and can last up to 25 years or more.

Solar power is becoming increasingly affordable, with the cost of solar panels and installations dropping significantly over the past decade.
